these may help with financing for assisted living.
The Aid and Attendance Benefit for Veterans and Surviving Spouses
This benefit is designed to help Veterans and their surviving spouses to pay for expenses related to assisted-living care. The limits on these tax-free benefits are adjusted by Congress each year.
There are three primary criteria the Veteran’s Administration considers when awarding benefits:

1. The Veteran must have served a minimum 90 days of active service, one day of which must have been during a period of war.
The VA defines periods of war as:
• World War 1 (April 6, 1917 – November 11, 1918)
• World War II (December 7, 1941 – December 31, 1946)
• Korean Conflict (June 27, 1950 – January 31, 1955)
• Vietnam Era (February 28, 1961 – May 7, 1975) for Veterans who served in the Republic of Vietnam during that period, otherwise, August 5, 1964 – May 7, 1975
• Gulf War (August 2, 1990 - through a future date to be set by law or Presidential Proclamation) - 2. The care must be considered medially necessary. That means the Veteran and/or their surviving spouse must have a medical condition which requires assistance with at least two activities of daily living such as bathing, eating, toileting, and more.
- 3. The Veteran must meet income and net-worth limits. The Veteran’s Administration will evaluate monthly income and assets, as well as the cost of senior care.
